NUCCAWhat is NUCCA?
NUCCA is an acronym for the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association. It is a form of chiropractic care that utilizes engineering
and physics principles to correct small misalignments (subluxations) of the neck (cervicals). The goal of NUCCA chiropractic is to restore
balance to the spine and in turn, the body.

This spinal balance is absolutely essential to overall health and body function as the spine’s purpose is to protect the spinal cord and nervous system which coordinates ALL aspects of your body’s systems (i.e. digestion, immunity, muscle coordination, etc.).

NUCCA is officially considered an upper cervical technique as only the C1 vertebra (the 1st vertebra below the skull) is touched; however, NUCCA has profound effects throughout the body. The particular area of the neck NUCCA focuses on, is critically important to proper function of the body and its systems as it affects one of the highest control centres over the body: the brain stem and central nervous system.

The Procedure
NUCCA is not a very well known procedure among the public. However, NUCCA and other forms of upper cervical chiropractic are just beginning to
receive media and public attention due to the amazing results that can result from upper cervical chiropractic (see High Blood Pressure Study).

NUCCA differs from other well known forms of chiropractic in several different ways:

  1. The NUCCA correction focuses only on the C1 (atlas) vertebra: a donut-like vertebra at the top of the spine. This vertebra is in close proximity to the brain stem which is vital controlling a number of essential body functions including muscle balance, breathing, and blood pressure.

  2. The adjustment is not determined by what the doctor feels is going on in the spine. In fact, the adjustment is determined by analyzing specific x-rays of the C1 vertebra that are taken prior to the 1st adjustment. A precise angle is determined from analysis of these films utilizing mathematics, physics and biomechanic principles. This angle is then used to “get your head on straight,” as a result improving body balance and function. After the 1st adjustment, a post set of x-rays will be taken and re-analyzed to determine how much of a correction was obtained. This 2nd set of films allow the doctor to prove a change was made as well as to perfect the C1 correction for each patient. If the correction was not optimal, the doctor will continue to re-adjust you until a favorable balance is achieved. This is especially important as we know that the better the correction, the better the chance for recovery.

  3. NUCCA does not involve any type of forceful twisting, cracking or popping of the neck. During a NUCCA correction, you will be asked to lie on your side, the doctor will place his or her hands behind your ear and gently apply a number of corrections. In fact, many patients do not even realize
    the correction is taking place!

While the NUCCA correction is a very subtle correction, the results are anything but subtle! Even if you’ve tried other forms of chiropractic and have not seen success, it is possible for you to not only achieve relief from your problem, you may recover over time and regain stability and function. Each patient is unique and requires a unique solution. NUCCA can be that solution.
